The past week was all about activities celebrating Earth Day that was on April 22, 2017 this year. The students presented their recyclable projects explaining what recyclables and fasteners were used to make the objects. Many of the St. James Staff and students have commented positively on the very inventive projects that were made by the students and their families after viewing the display outside our classroom. The students worked on newspaper Earth's that were painted with newspaper brushes. Our next step this week will by composing a written response on what the students can do to protect and care for the Earth. Under Mrs. Nancy's direction each student planted a flower. Mrs. Nancy asked that when your child's pansy is planted at home, please send back the pots so that they can be reused next Earth day. On Friday the students took part in an outdoor cleanup of the school yard. Also please continue to send in AA batteries (only this kind) that are being recycled at school.

After we had collected enough recyclable materials for the class, the students asked to make Leprechaun Traps. Since we were working on a unit in Science called Materials, Objects and Everyday Structures, I felt the subject of building Leprechaun Traps fit into some of the objectives of the unit. The students were able to: 2.4 use technological problem-solving skills and knowledge acquired from previous investigations, to design and build a structure for a specific purpose. 2.6 use a variety of forms to communicate with different audiences and for a variety of purposes. (Students had to orally explain their choices of materials, fasteners and design decisions when presenting their structures.) The students also had to incorporate in decorating the traps their knowledge of what would attract a leprechaun through our study of leprechaun literature and observation of student trap samples from the internet. All the students were very proud of their creations even though we have not caught any leprechauns in class and are still hoping that they can catch one with their traps at home. Last week the students were working on Easter activities such as decorating eggs, math activities including jelly bean math, and making an Easter rabbit. We also had enough recyclable materials to begin work on our leprechaun traps. The students drew detailed plans for their traps that they labelled. They found that modifications had to be made due to the type of recyclable materials that were available. Due to Earth Day being next Saturday we will be studying how to take care of the Earth through the three R's (recycle, reuse and renew). All students are asked to reuse recycled materials to make an object, person, or creature for Show and Tell this coming Friday. We will also be learning about the history of Earth Day, working on reusable art activities and writing and taking part in a school yard clean-up. The Earth Day activities will cover curriculum expectations in math, reading, writing, media literacy, science and visual arts. During the last couple of weeks the students have been working on activities in math involving subtraction. This activity has the students working on subtraction stories with a partner that involve showing pictures, numbers and words. This week we also welcomed a new student Alayna to our classroom. This brings our class total to 18 students. |
