During the last week we have been working on Earth Day activities. We have read many books and the students are familiar with the terms recycle, reuse, and reduce. The students have created crafts using recycled items such as boxes, newspaper, and bubble wrap. One of the most popular centers the students are using is a series of boxes in which they use their own imagination in their play. On Earth Day Miss Nancy provided students with flowers for them to pot and take home. I am eagerly looking forward to seeing what our students dream up for their recycled project for Show and Tell this week.

On Friday the students decorated Easter eggs to take home. With the extra eggs the students took part in an egg race. The students played boys versus girls. Everyone won! As a completion of our work on measurement using potatoes, the students voted to make French fries, cheesy potatoes and chips rather then throw out the potatoes. Most of the children loved eating the potatoes. The JK students even used some to make purple potato prints for the letter Pp art page. Today the students worked on their math skills by working with a partner while doing math work stations. The students were exploring concepts such as patterning, counting, number recognition and addition skills through the use of games and activities. During math work stations the students rotate to a different station (math work box) each day while working on different activities in their box. The students explore math concepts that have previously been taught in class during whole group time. The students will explore the activities in their assigned math work box for 7-10 minutes every other day. On opposite days the students work on literacy work stations exploring concepts such as letter recognition, word work, writing, reading and listening to stories. Today a number of students made Easter egg art by using shaving cream and food dye. Shaving cream was spread on a tray and the students picked the different food dye they wanted to use. The students then mixed the dye and shaving cream with a straw until a pleasing colour combination was made. Cut out Bristol board in the shape of an egg was placed face down in the shaving cream. The students pressed the paper egg down firmly into the shaving cream. The egg was then taken out and the extra shaving cream was squeegeed off. A beautiful marbled egg was the result. Last month I had asked the students to bring in a potato. We have finished using the potatoes for a math exercise in measuring. Students completed a booklet about their potato. They completed different measurements with the potato using the unfix cubes (length), linkits (circumference), and weight using a balance scale (heavier or lighter then). The students also had to describe their potato as well as see if it floats. Finally the students had to decide what was their favourite way to eat a potato (French fries, chips, mashed and baked). Most students chose French fries. As a class we will be graphing how we want to cook and eat the potatoes now that we do not need them for math. Last Friday during play time a few students were exploring building structures with the cups. The students were so proud of their accomplishment that they asked to have their pictures taken. Mrs. Curtin read the book, "No Carrots for Harry" during Whole Group Activity time. Some of the students then went on to explore carrot painting during play time. As a final activity the students painted a Mr. or Mrs. Bigmouth. They were given 20 teeth (beans) to glue onto the mouth to represent the 20 teeth they have in their mouths. Students were then asked what Mr. or Mrs. Bigmouth would say about how to keep their teeth healthy. Each student then wrote their idea on a speech bubble. Their paintings and writings where displayed on a bulletin board in the hallway. The students received many compliments from the St. James staff. |
