The students had a great time at Thiessen's Apple Orchard this past Thursday. The students had a short lesson on the life cycle of the apple and then we went on the tractor for a ride to the orchard. At the pumpkin patch the students shared their knowledge about the life cycle of the pumpkin. The students were able to pick their own pumpkins. After lunch the students picked their apples from the bins due to the fact there were no apples left on the trees, because of the hot weather this past fall. The students then went to look at the animals and spent time in the play/equipment area. A big thank you to our chaperones! All the students had a fun time.

This past week the students began working through the various literacy stations we have. Students rotate through the stations with a partner. They are working on Write The Room, Listening To Books, Read To Self, working on reading or sight words on the iPad, the Writing Centre, and Word Work Centre. Students will work on these centres for 12-15 minutes at a time while I will be working on Guided Reading with a group of students. I will be seeing two groups for Guided Reading while the other students work at the various literacy centres. Literacy Centre time is only one aspect of the total Literacy Block we have in the morning. During the week we work on Poetry Reading, Phonics, Sight Words, Writing and Shared Reading or Read Aloud. Some of these activities are also integrated with Science, Social Studies, Health, Music, Religion, and Family Life. For our gym classes the students have been working on listening and movement skills. We always start with a warm-up activity to get our heart rate up. Here the students are playing Fruit Salad. This game involves each student given the name of a fruit (strawberry, banana, grape). Students run from one side of the gym to the other if their fruit name is called. All students run when fruit salad is called. This past week the students are showing listening skills and exploring different movement activities using hula hoops and music. As a warm-up for math, the students continue to work with a partner on a math game. This week the students were working on a variation of the snakes and ladders game using up and down green and red arrows. The board has numbers 1 to 120 on it. Students have to roll a dice and move there pawn the required number of spaces on the board. The students are working on their number recognition and counting skills in order to play the game properly. Also this week the students started on one of our language activities Write The Room. The students were very proud of what they could write and were very eager to read their writing to each other and me. On Thursday the grade one students went on their Terry Fox Walk around the school. Each student dedicated the walk to their own family member or friend. After the students had some fun on the equipment. |
