This week the students have been learning about the beginnings of Earth Day through stories read to them. We have also discussed the importance of recycling items to be used in other ways rather then adding them to our garbage. On Friday Miss Nancy, who takes care of the school snack program as well as the gardens, organized the students to plant flowers to take home. The students also participated in a school wide clean up of the yard. In art/writing the students are in the process of creating posters that will be posted in the school to remind students to recycle and keep the yard tidy. Their art of the Earth was done with recycled newspaper. During play time a number of students have continued to be very creative in using recycled pieces of garbage (Kleenex boxes, paper towel rolls, elastics) to create works of art.

For Show and Tell last week the students were required to bring in items that reflect their own heritage and cultural background. This reflects the objective in the Early Learning Kindergarten Program in Social Development: 3.3 talk about events or retell stories that reflect their own heritage and cultural background and the heritage and cultural backgrounds of others. The students have also started a new program called Fun Friends with Miss Hooper. The program is to help the children learn to be brave and happy, to be kind to others, and be a friend. One of the activities in Session One involved exploring differences between each other, which can be exciting and great! The students learned through their heritage projects that many students and their families were born in different places and may come from different countries. The students were able to show pictures, bring in objects, show family trees and even try out food that reflected the different student heritages. The students also showed how brave they were to get up in front of the class and share about their family backgrounds. The last couple of weeks the students have been exploring their language skills. Many students have taken to "Writing the Room" activities, while others are exploring word making during PALS time. Still others are creating art works that incorporate writing of letters, words, and names. |
