This week math number cards and alphabet cards will be going home with the junior and some senior kindergarten students. Please remember to cut the cards and work with only 5 cards at a time playing some of the various games and activities listed on the cover letters. As well I will be sending home a 100 number card with some of the senior kindergarten students that already know the numbers 1-30. Please help your child with any of the activities listed on the cover letter. I recommend that you spend no more then 10 minutes a day on the activities. Please continue to have your child practise printing their name each day.

The students have been hard at work on writing their letters to Santa Claus. We are also practising each day on our Christmas songs we will be performing at the Breakfast With Santa field trip on December 12. In math the students helped in sorting the items in their show and tell nature bags. Each day we are working on math work box activities with a partner. We have continued our work on Fire Safety such a discussing when to call 911 and making a plan on how to evacuate your home in case of a fire. The students have learned the importance of having a meeting place where the family can meet outside. The students have enjoyed playing in the ice cream centre and will be helping create a Santa's Workshop centre starting next week. If anyone has some non-breakable Christmas ornaments they would like to donate, that would be very helpful for use in our new centre. For the last week couple of weeks the students have been learning about fire safety. Have your child show you how they Stop, Drop, and Roll if their clothes catch on fire. We have been reading many books and watched videos about fire safety. They have learned everything from having working smoke alarms on every floor of your home to when to dial 911 as well as what to see in a fire house. Today Mr. Seguin was kind enough to bring in and show the students his firefighter gear since he is a volunteer firefighter in LaSalle. The students asked many questions and were able to try on some of Mr. Seguin's clothing. Ms. Colaluca modelled the various type of gear that Mr. Seguin needs to wear every time he fights a fire. Many of the students found the gear very heavy. Last Wednesday we reached the 50th day of school. As in the past the kindergartens had a 50's day. Many of the students and teachers dressed in 1950's wear. In the morning the students experienced activities that were popular in the 1950's such as bowling, hula hoops, scooters and having a sock hop. The students were shown how to blow bubbles with Double Bubble gum. Ms. Colaluca, Amirah and NyaLiep blew the biggest bubbles. In the afternoon we compared pictures of popular items in the 1950's with modern pictures of items, popular in 2014. All the students were amazed with the large size of actual records compared to using a CD or even their phone today. We then completed a graph on whether we thought the ice cream would float or not in our ice cream floats. All the students said that their ice cream would float on the graph. We found out that for some students it did, if they did not stir their float too much. The students ended the day with decorating a record as a keepsake of the 50's day. Great fun was had by all! Last Friday the students enjoyed playing various fall fun day games with their team in the morning. All the students were split up into individual teams with grade seven students being the team leader and grade eight students running the games. Each group moved around the school playing games. Taking pictures of the students was tricky in that we did not want other students in the shots. In the afternoon the students attended an assembly for the Student of the Month. Endaiya, John and Ava were picked for showing gratitude during the month of October. Meila was picked at the music Student of the Month and John was also chosen as the PALS Reader of the Month. During last week in math we were working on sorting. Using a haunted house mat, the students had to sort a variety of Halloween foam pictures and state what their sorting rule was. The students also spent some time examining the pollen in flowers. One of the questions the students had when we were learning about the pumpkin life cycle was how do bees get pollen on their bodies? The students used Q-tips to represent the bees body and were able to take pollen from one flower and place it on another flower. They were able to understand how bees are important in the life cycle of the apple and pumpkin. We also welcomed to new students, NyaLiep and Chloe to our class and were sad when Danial had to move to Alberta. |
