The students celebrated Earth Day by taking part in a few activities at school. Ms. Nancy made arrangements for all the students to take part in planting. The students also spent some time helping move wood chips into the gardens. This week the students will be exploring ways to help the Earth. The students will investigate the three R's (reuse, renew, recycle) through books, film, games and songs. Later on students will also be using the three R's to create something new. To that end we would appreciate the students sending in objects that can be reused to create a new object that the students plan and make. We are accepting cereal and package boxes, paper towel tubes, ribbon, string, fabric pieces, Styrofoam, paper, caps, plastic bottles, clean cans or any items that can be used to make something new. Please refrain from sending in egg cartons or toilet paper tubes due to germs.

Today the students took part in a field trip to Ojibway Park. The students enjoyed seeing a slide show about the plants and animals the students might see in the park as well as trying to figure out different animal calls. After a snack the students were broken up into three groups and went on a hike around the park. Back at the Nature Centre the students enjoyed meeting the centres' resident snake and even got to pet the snake before spending time making a snake craft and looking around the centre displays. Thanks to all the parents that made our trip possible. Great fun was had by all! The students have been working with their grade 7/8 buddies this past week in helping them draw and colour their own life size body. The students will then be using grocery flyers in order to cut out healthy foods that they will glue to their bodies. I also took pictures of the students working on their pussy willow art pieces as well as playing in the new flower shop centre the students asked to create. Many of the students have been picking and bringing in the first flowers of spring-dandelions, while we wait for the bulbs we planted in the fall to flower. Spring has finally arrived. Thank goodness! In class we have been taking about the various signs of spring including the appearance of pussy willows. The students have been studying the pussy willow branches, drawing them and are working on an art piece with the pussy willow branches as the theme. In math we continue to work on our measurement unit. The students are busy measuring themselves as well as objects in the room. We continue to explore healthy habits for our bodies. The students have explored the four food groups and know what foods to pick that are healthy for their bodies. We have also explored various ways we can keep our bodies healthy through exercise, getting enough sleep, taking care of our teeth, washing our bodies and hands to keep germs away as well as eating healthy foods. I sent home a Healthy Habits Home Study chart that the students can check off each day they complete a healthy habit. All student charts that are returned on Monday, April 20, 2015 will earn 50 bonus points for their houseleague team. This week the students will be exploring their teeth in more detail as a conclusion to our healthy habits unit of study. Have your child explain to you why we brush our teeth. They could also show you how to properly brush their teeth with their new toothbrushes. While the students have continued to enjoy the various centres in the classroom-pet centre, fine motor centre, writing centre, computer centre- we have also been working on a number of new activities the past few weeks. The students have continued to work with their grade eight buddies on math work station boxes. After the Easter holiday we will be changing to more spring time math activities. The students have started a unit in math on measurement. They explored the concept of length by measuring each other to see if they were taller then a one meter string in order to go on a Ferris wheel. They concluded that 20 students could go on the large Ferris wheel but 2 were shorter than the string and would have to go on the small Ferris wheel. We have also been exploring colours. The students have learned that they can make secondary colours (purple, orange, green) by mixing primary colours (red, yellow, blue) using water and food colours. They have also learned about making different colour shades. We have explored what a plant need to grow after we saw what happened to our shamrock plant once we got back from March break. We tested out the student's ideas about how to get the plant to grow again by giving it water and plant food. They finally decided that nothing would make the plant grow again and it was truly dead. For Easter we have continued to follow our Lent calendar and count down each day until Easter. The students have enjoyed making a few Easter art pieces-Lent cross, painted Easter egg and dyeing/decorating their own Easter egg. Congratulations to NyaLiep and Anderson our Students of the Month for March. The theme for March was goodness. The students would also like to thank Paul and Louwanna Closs and the volunteers at Divine Mercy Special Works Conference that created and donated the Easter baskets for our school. The students were so happy to receive them. Have a great Easter holiday. |
