In math we have been working on patterning. Last week the students had to make a pattern involving the students in some way and the class had to guess what the pattern was. The students were also working on a new math game called 'Gone Fishing'. The students deal out 7 cards each and the goal is to make matches that equal 10. If students cannot make a ten they can ask their partner for a card to make ten. If the partner does not have the card asked for, the partner will tell the student to go fish and pick a card from the deck. This game is particularly good for reviewing numbers 1 through 10 and for addition using facts for 10.

Every week we read one or two poems together. The students choral read the poems with me. We also investigate the poems for sight words the student know. Here you can see individual students reading one of the poems on their own. This coming week I will also be sending home a reading book the students have picked that is at their own current reading level. The students are to practice reading the book at home and return it on the following Monday in order to change the book. I will also be sending home a 4-day lesson plan you can follow to help your child read the book. A student will not get a new book unless the old one is returned. Most students have been given a sight word ring to practice at home. These are words your child needs to work on to help them become better readers. The words the students know have a sticker on the back of the word card. The students need to practice all the words so that there is no thinking about the word when they read it. Once a student recognizes all the words on their ring, they will be given a certificate. They will then be tested on the next set of words. I would like all sight word rings returned every Friday so that I can retest the students on their words. In the event there is no classes on Friday, I would like the sight word rings returned on Thursday for testing. Some students do not have sight word rings because they are still working on recognizing all letter names and sounds. These students will be given alphabet rings to practice at home. These alphabet rings should also be returned on Fridays. The students also have a opportunity to practice these sight word rings during the week at literacy centre time.
Congratulations to Brody for being chosen for our Journey To Holiness Award for Knowledge. With Halloween last week, the students worked on completing their Jack-O-Lanterns in class. The class was able to mix red and yellow paints they were given so their pumpkins were orange in colour. Then the students spent time cutting out and decorating them how they liked. Each Jack-O-Lantern was unique. The students also did a some cooking with Miss Nancy by making apple crisp with the apples we got from our field trip to Thiessen's Apple Orchard. The apple crisp was liked by most of the students. |
