Part of the school day is taken up by centre work. During the literacy block in the morning the students spend a good portion of the 100 minutes a day working on centres while Ms. Raniwsky and I are doing guided reading. Ms. Raniwsky is a former teacher and principal that volunteers twice a week to do guided reading with the students. Students that are not doing guided reading are working on centre activities such as read to self, listening to reading, writing, word work, phonics pocket chart activities, write the room or iPad work on sight words. The students rotate through the centres with their partner each day. During the math block the students also rotate through math centres with their partner. Each math centre students are practicing various math related skills such as addition, subtraction, number recognition, number writing, graphing, and/or measurement. Even though the time is short the students are learning not just math or literacy skills but also how to work with a partner. Congratulations to Aleah who was awarded the Journey to Holiness award for Belonging.

We continue to work on our measurement unit. The students went around the classroom measuring items that were longer, shorter and the same size as a 1 meter string. We have also been studying area. The students measured their desk tops as well as estimating and measuring a mitten diagram using unifix cubes. We have also started some new math workstation activities involving addition and subtraction. We are continuing to work on identifying teen numbers to 20 using base ten blocks, number lines, numbers, words and ten frames. Last Tuesday the school students took part in various classes in the morning that promoted being in a "Healthy State of Mind". The students learned ways to promote a healthy mind such as using breathing exercises and meditation to promote feelings of calmness and quietness. They completed a session with Sister Connie on prayer. They were taught to believe in themselves through positive thoughts and contributed ways to calm their bodies through writing. The students lastly were exposed to a session on yoga. This week the students practiced making estimates and measuring the length of their friends using a non-standard measuring device; a straw. Ella was chosen as the Journey to Holiness Award winner for Kindness for the month of February. Please turn in all unsold chocolate bars and money if you have not done so already. Every Friday the students are encouraged to wear their house-league shirts in order to gain points for their teams. |
