The students enjoyed many different activities for Carnival put on by the grade 8 students. Each of the students were put in different groups and moved throughout the school during the morning taking part in activities that were inspired by the French Winter Carnival in Quebec City. The students particularly enjoyed the maze and dressing up as Bonhomme Carnaval. In the afternoon the students enjoyed a crepe dessert made and served by the senior grades.

Today was the 100th day of school. The students enjoyed performing 100 exercises in gym class, makings a hat with 100 stickers, building a structure with 100 cups, making a gumball machine with 100 gumballs as well as practising their counting to 100. Last Friday the students also brought in their collections of 100 items that they shared with the class. This week the 100th day activities will continue as we could not finish all our activities in one day. During the past few weeks the students have continued to enjoy working in the pizza centre. They are also working on Pizza Glyphs based on themselves. In the writing centre the students are all about making books. We have also welcomed Ms. Dennis in our classroom who is here from the education program at the University of Windsor to work with the students making observations. In math we have continued to work on number identification through our snowman game and using 5 frames in order to compose number amounts as well as practice some addition skills. The students concluded the 2 dimensional shape unit by making pictures of objects using various 2 dimensional shapes. Take a look at our bulletin boards to answer the question "What do you see?". Next we will be working on a unit of measurement. To start off the unit the students measured their snowperson they made after listening to the book "Snowballs". The students completed a painting for their snowperson using bright colours which was used as the background for their snowperson. They then decorated their snowperson with crayons and found items from around the room to create a collage effect just like in the book "Snowballs". The tallest snowperson made was by Sophia at 23 unifix cubes long. For Groundhog Day the students predicted that the groundhog would not see his shadow. We hope that Spring will come early? Congratulations to Josh and Sophia for being the January Student of the Month. The theme for January was Integrity. |
