As a final project for our literacy study of the many gingerbread man type books, the students had to create a way to help the gingerbread man cross the water. The students noted that in the gingerbread man books we read the gingerbread man always needed help to cross the water which resulted in him being eaten. As part of our technology studies I wanted the students to answer the question of what could they build in order to help the gingerbread man get across the water and not get eaten. In class we brainstormed what they could construct (boat, bridge, helicopter, angel, submarine, climbing ropes . . .) and the materials they may need to make their creations (paper, wood, plastic, string, glue, tape, cardboard . . .). On Thursday the students had to draw up a plan for their construction and on Friday the students were given the materials to make their project. The students spent most of the afternoon constructing their creations. All the students were noticeably proud of their creations.

As a conclusion to our literacy study of various gingerbread man books the students helped make a gingerbread man for themselves. All the students had a hand in making or decorating the gingerbread man. After making the gingerbread man the class went to the kitchen to take him out of the oven. Miss Nancy had turned off the oven for us so he would not burn. The students were astonished to find the gingerbread man missing from the pan, just like in the stories we read. We thought that maybe Miss Nancy had opened the oven door and he ran away so the students went on a search for him. After searching for him in the kitchen, Harrison found a clue on the wall which led the students to search the music room. After searching the grade 7&8 and grade 8 rooms, the students found another clue on Mr. Bell's door which led the students to Mrs. Baggio's office. That clue led us to Mrs. Bowyer's office but she said she hadn't seen him. The clue in her office led us to the library, which led us to the art supply room, which led to the gym. In the gym the clue led us back to our classroom where we found our gingerbread man sitting on the teacher's rocking chair. After decorating him it was suggested that we eat him so he could not escape again. And that was the end of our class gingerbread man! This past week was all about the snow. We finally were able to get outside! The students enjoyed their time outside playing in the snow. We also brought the snow inside during play time. Students were able to explore man made snow (flour and oil) in the classroom with Arctic animals as well as playing with real snow during play time. As a reminder all students should have snow pants, waterproof boots, heavy waterproof gloves, and hats for playing outdoors. During lunch the students are outside for 40 minutes. Please make sure your child comes to school dresses appropriately. We also want to welcome two new students, Danik and Enrique. As you can tell they are identical twins. Happy New Year! As we enter into January and the colder weather, please remember to send your child to school with a heavy winter coat, snowpants, hat, boots, scarf and mittens. The middle recess is 40 minutes outside and the children really need their snowpants, boots and a good thick winter coat to keep them warm. It is also a good idea to send in extra mittens/gloves that your child can keep in their backpack as they easily get wet playing in the snow and don't dry before the next recess. With the colder weather it is also a good idea to include a sweater in their backpack since I am not able to regulate the temperature in the classroom. In math we will be continuing to work on 2 dimensional shapes and will be making some snowman name art that we can discuss with math terms. In reading we are investigating a variety of gingerbread stories and how they are the same but different. The students love to create gingerbread cookies with our gingerbread Playdoh. Our development center was changed to a vet center when it was noticed that the students were interested in the play medical equipment and were using it on the stuffy animals in the classroom. In writing the students are just finishing up their New Year's resolutions and will be working on what their favourite gingerbread story is and why. In science this week we started discussing and drawing our observations of an amaryllis bulb and the students were fascinated with how they created the soil we planted the bulb in. The students will be making observations and using measurement to keep track of the growth during the coming weeks. We were sorry that two students in our class moved during the holidays, Lucian and Gaddi. Congratulations to Damien who was chosen to receive the Journey to Holiness certificate for the month of December. |
