After learning about the pumpkin and apple life cycles through non-fiction texts, the students were eager to do some art work. The students were engaged in creating apple prints and painting a pumpkin in order to make their own jack-o-lantern for some Halloween art. We have also been learning some new songs and playing the Pass the Pumpkin game at the carpet. More pictures to come!

Last Wednesday the students along with the grade 7's in Mr. Bell's room spent some of the morning planting flower bulbs in the little garden. After Mrs. Nancy taught the students what a bulb looked like and how to plant it, the students paired up with the grade 7 students to plant their bulb. In order to further our science study of pumpkins and apples, I picked up some apples and apple cider while at Thiessen Apple Orchard last week. Miss Nancy was kind enough to come in to class today to help the kindergarten students make apple crisp. The students were involved in all aspects of preparing the apple crisp from peeling and coring the apples, to cutting the apples up, to making the oatmeal topping. At lunch the students were able to try the apple crisp and apple cider. Tomorrow during math class the students will be graphing whether they liked the apple crisp and apple cider. During literacy time we will be studying the apple further by reading books about the life cycle of the apple. Later on we will be comparing and contrasting observations of our class pumpkin and apples. Some expectations we will cover: 1.1 ask questions about and describe some natural occurrences, using their own observations and representations. DM5.2 collect objects and data and make representations of their observations, using concrete graphs. DM5.3 respond to and pose questions about data collection and graphs. 2.10 retell information from non-fiction materials that have been read by and with the EL-K team in a variety of contexts. 1.2 identify and talk about their own interests and preferences. 2.2 demonstrate a willingness to try new activities. Today the kindergarten students participated in the pumpkin tour at Thiessen Orchards. The students learned about the life cycle of the pumpkin from a tiny seed to a large pumpkin. They learned that the pumpkin is actually a fruit and that there are many different kinds. The tour lady said that our students were great listeners! We then took a tour of the orchard in a wagon pulled by a tractor. We saw a number or pumpkin patches and the apple orchard. At the pick you own pumpkin patch, Ms. Colaluca raced to find the largest pumpkin compared to Mrs. Buzzeo's class. We won! Ours was the largest and heaviest. The students then went into the pumpkin patch to pick their own pumpkin. After lunch the students spent the afternoon in Pete's Fun Acre, Hay Mow and Corn Maze. Thank you to all the parents that helped our class. Great fun was had by all. |
