During our last week of school the students were involved in planting their bean seeds that had sprouted in their Ziploc bags we had placed on the windows of the classroom. The students were amazed at the size of the plants after were came to school on Monday. Also this week Chloe's family brought in some baby goats and rabbits that her grandparents have. The students were eager to touch and hold the animals. Ms. Colaluca and I would like to wish all our students and their families a safe and happy summer.

Last Friday the students enjoyed the Pan Am Fun Games all day. Students were divided up into teams of different countries and rotated to different games reminiscent of the Pan Am Games in Toronto this summer. All the students enjoyed themselves. The students had a great end of the year field trip to Willowood Resort Centre. Thank you to all the parents who made our class trip possible. The students enjoyed the play equipment, golf putting green and the kiddy pool. Great fun was had by all! During Language time we have been discussing rhyming words. We have looked at a number of word family cards such as for "at" or "an". We have matched picture cards with word cards. We have read a number of word family books and the students have been able to pick out the rhyming text. We have also played a matching game in order to make rhyming words from certain word families. Having your child pick out the rhyming words when you read stories to them is a good indication your child is learning to master their reading skills. As part of our science unit on understanding the natural world and the need to care for and respect the environment, the students were exposed to the ideas of reusing and recycling. After reading a number of books on the subject the students were able to discuss different ways of taking care of the environment such as conserving energy through turning off the tap when brushing their teeth or turning off the lights when leaving a room. We also discussed landfills and how it is important to reuse and recycle as much as we can. As a conclusion to our unit the students were encouraged to create a recycled project. After looking at the various recycled material I brought in through playing the recycling game (sorting recycled material by paper, cans, bottles, and plastic) the students made a plan of what they wanted to build. For a number of days the students were encouraged to create their ideas out of the recycled materials with minimal help. The students were very proud of their creations. |
