The past week the students have been working on the colour panels for the classroom. The class spent time painting the panels and on the second day working with a partner on gluing the various colour pieces the students brought in from their show and tell assignment. In gym the students were exploring yoga poses with a DVD for kids I brought in. During the rainy days for gym, we explore movement activities to music.

Starting this week the students will be taking home a book to read for homework during the week. The book the students will be picking will be at their reading level and not the instructional level books that I use during our differentiated guiding reading time. Please read over the 4-day reading plan information that I will be sending home with the book. The reading plan is a guide for parents on how you can help your child with their reading over the week. I have also sent home math number cards and/or hundred charts with suggested activities you can do with your child to help them become more familiar with numbers 1-100. Since all the students are familiar with numbers 1-10, I suggest that you test your child with what numbers they know versus what numbers they don't know. Basic counting to 100 as well as being able to count to 100 by 2's, 5's, and 10's is encouraged as we do these activities in school every day. We have had to say goodbye to Dylon, Naiyo and Scott who have moved to new schools. As a result we have also lost Mrs. Pieczonka who has moved on to help one of the kindergarten classes at school. We wish our three friends all the best at their new schools. We will miss Mrs. Pieczonka's help very much, but wish her well with her new students. Students in math have been working on a Number Sense unit. The students are also working on healthy eating as part of their unit in Science on Energy. Later on they will be completing healthy eating posters for the school. In Social Studies we have started a unit on Community and on Friday took a walk about the neighbourhood completing a scavenger hunt to find certain items in their neighbourhood. In literacy and math the students continue to work on centers in which they can practice new skills in word study, phonics, graphing, number recognition to 20 and counting. On Friday the students shared their Fall Scavenger Hunt items with the class. The students completed their work on pumpkins in math by counting the seeds in them. Students had to decide what pumpkin had the most seeds, the small, medium or large one and placing their answer on a graph. After reading the book " How Many Seeds In A Pumpkin?" the students were given an opportunity to change their mind after learning that the number of lines on a pumpkin means there is a row of seeds on the inside of the pumpkin. Students also worked on counting the seeds by 2's, 5's, and 10's. We found that the large pumpkin had the most seeds. The smallest pumpkin was used to find out about decomposition. We placed pieces of garbage like a pop can, food wrappers and banana peels inside the pumpkin and then we buried it in the front yard. Students had to predict what would happen to the pumpkin and garbage in the spring when we dig it back up. Ask your child what they think will happen with the pumpkin. The other two pumpkins went into the composter. |
