Last week was about celebrating Earth Day. The students started the week off with planting flowers with Mrs. Nancy. We then took part in cleaning up the school yard of garbage. In Science the students have been learning about how Earth Day started. We continue to work on ways we can take care of our Earth through the three R's. On Friday the students showed and talked about their recycling project they made. All the students were able to share with the class what they made their projects out of and how they were fastened as part of our science unit on Materials and Structures. This week the students will continue to work on an art and writing piece about how they can take care of the Earth.

During last week the students took part in some fun Easter activities. For math the students worked on Jelly Bean math for their data management unit. Students needs to sort their jelly beans by colour, record the colours in a graph, answer questions about their results and complete some addition problems. The students also created an Easter bunny craft and dyed and decorated their own Easter egg. Great fun was had by all! As part of the fundraiser for the Heart and Stroke Foundation the students took part in Jump Rope For Heart activities. Earlier in the week, during gym class, the grade one students were helped by their grade six buddies with their skipping skills. The students worked with skipping ropes, hula hoops and basket balls for the Jump Rope activities. As part of our literacy block in the morning we always start off with shared reading in the form of one or two poems. These poems are completed for the week and involve seasonal themes. In addition to practicing choral reading we also look at the sight words and punctuation in each poem. The students are always eager to show how they have mastered the poems by reading them in front of the class. Each Monday a copy of the poems are placed in the student's poetry duotangs so the students can practice them through the week when doing read to self during work stations. Just a reminder that poetry books go home on Friday so the students can practice them at home and should be returned every Monday. The students have physical education class twice a week. The students completed working on parachute activities for physical education. and are now working on circuit activities involving hula hoops, basketballs, scooters and skipping ropes. |
