The students have started a new unit in math, working on number sense. This unit involves adding and subtracting numbers. In health we are studying dental health since February is when dental health is celebrated. In literacy we continue to study our five words of the week. In addition certain students have been given their own ball sight word rings to practice at home during the week. Please make sure the sight word rings are returned to school each Friday so that I may test the students on their rings. Also please return their home reading books on Monday so that the students can exchange their books. You may have noticed your child's reading books are at a different level in response to recent PM Benchmark independent reading levels that have changed. In writing the students are working on an assignment about what they love. In reading we will be studying the differences between non-fiction and fiction texts by looking at penguins. With the kindergarten addition finished we once again have the use of the gym. The students were excited to get in the gym on Friday. We will now be able to add different equipment to our gym lessons. The students will be learning commands using games and activities with hula-hoops for the next couple of weeks. In science the students have started a new unit called 'Materials, Structures and Objects'. Thank you to all the families that have donated recyclable materials for this unit. The students will eventually be using the materials to build their own structures. In social studies the students have started a section in our 'Local Community' study on mapping. We have been learning about the parts of a map and the students will be using their new knowledge to study maps of the neighbourhood, school and making a map of their bedroom. In social skill class with Mrs. Wilson the students have been working on emotions and feelings in the Fun Friends Program. In Family Life the students have started Unit 3 Created Sexual: Male and Female. Please refer to the letter sent home last week that details the topics we will be covering. In religion we are studying about the old testament topics of creation and stories of famous figures such as Noah's Ark and Abraham. If you have any questions please feel free to write me a note in the student's agenda or just call me at school after 3:00 p.m.

This month the students have been working on various math activities during math work station time. On Valentine's Day the students worked on math using Conversation Heart candies. The students had to estimate how many candy hearts would fit on a small heart. The students then had to count how many actual candy hearts fit on the actual heart and compare their result with their estimate. The students then moved on to sorting and graphing their candy hearts. They then answered a number of questions as well as working on some addition problems with the results and completing a valentine pattern. For art the students worked on creating what they would look like if they were 100 years old. In math we had a scavenger hunt for 100 candy canes. We are still missing one. Today we reached the 100th day of school. The student's day was centered on making 100th day necklaces using patterns, making 100th day hats with 100 stamps or stickers, presenting their 100th day collections and counting out 100 pieces for their hungry hash. I planned so many activities that we are going to have to complete our art and writing assignments through the rest of the week. Great fun was had by all the students. During the last two art classes the students have been working on art paintings inspired by the work of Jim Dine. who often would use a heart motif in his paintings. The students did their paintings in two stages. Stage one was a basic colour block of the center heart and borders. Stage two involved painting different types of designs and colours onto their colour blocked paintings. Each piece of work turned out to be truly unique to the student artist. As a final part of their painting the students will discuss what they liked, what they could have done better and what they want to call their artwork. On February 2nd, Groundhog Day, the students created a groundhog shadow catcher to help in their prediction about whether the groundhog would see his shadow. We started the morning by reading a non-fiction book about groundhogs. The students learned that if the groundhog saw their shadow, we would have 6 more weeks of winter. The students were very eager to test out their groundhog shadow catchers outside. The students were very happy to learn that Wiarton Willie did not see his shadow and therefore Spring would come early. The students were happy that Wiarton Willie was not in Windsor, since the students all saw their groundhogs shadows outside. |
