Our caterpillars have grown bigger since we last looked at them. The students have noted that not only has the size changed but as the caterpillars have gotten bigger their look has changed. You can now see that some of the caterpillars have white areas on their bodies. The students continue to be fascinated with the poop that the caterpillars produce in their container which needs to be cleaned out so that they have access to their food. The students have also noted that the small black spots in their container is their skin that they shed as they grow bigger. Day 1 Today the students were excited to learn that our Painted Lady caterpillars had arrived. Each caterpillar comes in its own container with all the food it will need before it turns into a chrysalis. The students were also fascinated with the poop that caterpillars make. Some of the student observations that were made about the caterpillars were that they are small, black, and spikey looking. In order to take advantage of the good weather, the students had gym outside today. While students were playing on the playground equipment, they were also given the option of playing basketball, using hula hoops, skipping and making bubbles. It is their favourite way to have gym. After reading the book "Bend It Stretch It Rubber" we discussed how much room old tires take up in landfills. The students were given an investigation about imagining building a road from old tires. The students were given a plastic cup filled with Cheerios (tires). We discussed how they could make the tires (Cheerios) smaller. It was decided that the students would crush the tires after they marked the amount of space the tires took up in the cup. After crushing the tires the students noticed the new amount of space the tires took up in the cup. All students noted that the tires took up a smaller amount of space. Therefore crushing the tires would take up a smaller space in a landfill. In order to make a road, water and wallpaper paste were added to the cup. Once the material was mixed it was put on a paper and the student groups proceeded to make a road. Some groups were better at it then others. Some groups found that if they overworked the material they could not build a road. We took a vote and decided that Heidi and Parker's road turned out the best. It was in the shape of a heart. Last Friday the students were asked to bring in a recycled art project for Show and Tell. A number of projects were brought in showing great imagination. All the projects were made with recycled garbage. I would like to thank all parents for their help with this project. For math today we were looking at and locating numbers in our environment. After playing "I Spy" in the classroom we moved to filling in a chart with pictures of numbers we could see from our seats at the carpet. After filling in our chart the students were given a paper and marker. Students needed to draw the numbers they saw while moving through the hallways. Next class the students will present their partner work. |
