The students worked on an absorption of materials experiment for our unit on Materials, Structures and Objects. The students first made a prediction about which materials would absorb water and which wouldn't. Then the students were ready to try out their theories. The students tested napkins, cotton, wax paper, tin foil, sponges, bread, feathers, and plastic wrap. In math the students have been learning how to conduct a survey. The students had to ask 10 friends what type of pet they liked. This week the students will present to the class what their results for the survey are. During the last couple of weeks the students have been working on 3-dimensional geometry in math. After contributing to a class chart about the different 3-dimensional shapes; looking at the number and shape of the faces, vertices and what the shapes look like as real objects, the students demonstrated how they can identify, sort, pattern and build the shapes. The students helped Miss Nancy with Spring Planting. The students helped weed the front garden. They also helped plant pots. During our field trip to Ojibway Nature Centre the students learned about some of the animals they would see in the park during the spring. They also played a game to identify the animal sounds they may hear. We enjoyed a guided tour through the park and saw many different birds, turtles, chipmunks and even a raccoon. We learned about some rare plants on our walk. We got to meet and touch the resident snake and see some of the preserved specimens on display in the visitor's area. A thanks to the parents and also nursing students who helped chaperone our trip. Great fun was had by all! This past week the students worked hard on their Mother's Day gifts. I hope all mothers had a Happy Mother's Day! For math we continue to work on number identification to 20. In science and literacy the students have been learning about Earth Day and ways to take care of the Earth. This week the students are going to work on a writing piece about how they can take care of the Earth using our lessons on the three R's; reducing, reusing, and recycling. Along with their writing the students created a painted model of the Earth using recycled newspaper for the base and their brush. This coming week the students are eager to work on their Mother's Day gifts. Last week was about celebrating Earth Day. The students started the week off with planting flowers with Mrs. Nancy. We then took part in cleaning up the school yard of garbage. In Science the students have been learning about how Earth Day started. We continue to work on ways we can take care of our Earth through the three R's. On Friday the students showed and talked about their recycling project they made. All the students were able to share with the class what they made their projects out of and how they were fastened as part of our science unit on Materials and Structures. This week the students will continue to work on an art and writing piece about how they can take care of the Earth. During last week the students took part in some fun Easter activities. For math the students worked on Jelly Bean math for their data management unit. Students needs to sort their jelly beans by colour, record the colours in a graph, answer questions about their results and complete some addition problems. The students also created an Easter bunny craft and dyed and decorated their own Easter egg. Great fun was had by all! |
