The children have been asking about the winter sports. We spoke about the Olympics by talking about Mr. Adams running with the Olympic torch by showing his torch and other materials shared through out our school. We set up an Olympic sport day based on the a word web of sports around winter sports they would like to try. They talked about curling, skating, hockey and more....

The kindergarten students have been studying the book "The Snowy Day" by Jack Keats. In our discussions about the book, we have been talking about the setting and what the students like to do in the winter. Our discussions have also led to what animals do in the winter and how it is hard for animals to find food in the winter. Today the students used corn syrup, bird seed and pine cones to construct little bird feeders. We then took our pine cone feeders and hung them outside for the birds to eat.
The class has been working on the idea of making fair shares in math. Using a two penguin mat from Deanna Jump, the students were encouraged to count out a certain number of fish crackers and then fairly share them between the two penguins. Students had to decide if the sharing was fair or not. The students were working on counting skills and encouraged to count one by one and recognize whether the number given could be shared fairly. We also then discussed which penguin had the most or least and whether the number was an even or odd number. This particular activity is the beginning steps toward working with fractions in the older grades.
Last Friday the kinder friends celebrated Carnaval. Each student was put in a group. Each group moved from station to station working on winter Carnaval activities during the morning. In the afternoon the students handed out their Valentines. http://stjcschool.blogspot.ca http://carnaval.qc.ca/en/ The students were excited this morning since it was the 100th day of school. The students made 100th day hats by drawing pictures or putting stickers on 10 strips. The hats were either made into a crown or kept as a jester's hat. The students counted out their 100th day hash to eat and share at home. We also shared what we could eat 100 of and the students wrote what they would do with 100 dollars. For art the students made a 100 count gum ball machine and will be making a portrait of themselves to show what they would look like at 100 years old. Great fun was had by all! The children were given shaving cream and paint. Miss Prymack provided feathers, pipe cleaners and spoons as well as paper plates. They mixed the primary colours together and they found it turned green. They asked for paper and made their hand prints and letters as well. The children said.... Emory - It looks like rainbows. Ivan - It smells like soap. Jolin - the white looks like a cloud. The children were able to take turns first to put some vinegar into the baking soda filled volcano and watch the reaction. They also chose colours as well. This is what the children observed with the baking soda. Emory - Squishy Stormy - Fluffy Abby - Soft When the food colouring was introduced. Stormy - Red and blue make black. Destiny - Yellow and red made orange. Bella - It's getting chunky and hard. ( She noticed that when the colour mixed with the baking soda it got chunky) Emory -It's sticky. Bella - It's hard. We heard the noise that was made when the vinegar and baking soda mixed together. Stormy - Bubbles! Ivan - Sounds like burning, popping. Emory - Sounds like a volcano. P.J. - It's bubbling. The children have been interested in snow. We tried a recipe and the kids had a great time for about an hour exploring with shaving cream and baking soda together and then watching the reaction of spraying vinegar on the snowmen as well.

We welcome our Early Childhood Education student Miss Prymack from St. Clair College. She will be on her teaching field placement for 5 weeks.
She has created a nice introduction of herself below. Hello my name is Carlie Prymack. I am a second year student in Early Childhood Education at St. Clair College. I will be St. James for 5 weeks, from the beginning of February until the beginning of March. While I am here I will be making observations on the children, implementing 5 large groups and 9 small groups and within 4 of those groups I will be implementing math and literacy activities. Three of my days with the children I will be taking over for Mrs. Curtin, while being observed. While I am here I will also create a documentation panel, this panel is based on three activities I have implemented with the children. I am looking forward to meeting you and your children and getting to know you. I am thrilled to be here working and learning from your children. About me: Even though work and school keep me busy I enjoy playing soccer. I have become too old for house league soccer so last summer coached 10 year old girls’ soccer. This was a great experience and I enjoyed watching the progress we made as a team. I plan to coach again because I enjoyed it. Try not to become a man of success but a man of value. -Albert Einstein Carlie Prymack |
