For a while now the students have been working on literacy activities with their grade 7/8 buddies. The students work in pairs with one buddy during literacy work station time. Many of the activities are based on alphabet or colour recognition skills that the students need practice with.

This past Thursday the kindergarten students celebrated reaching the 50th day of school with a 1950's style day. Many students as well as the teachers dressed in 1950's style wear: white T-shirts, jeans, leather/jean jackets, poodle skirts, pony tails and greased hair. The students investigated how items from the past have since changed in 2015. We discussed changes in how we listen to music, watch TV, how we dress, the cars and trucks that we drive, the toys they play with and the type of books we read today. The students enjoyed a 1950's style drink, an ice cream float. The students made predictions about whether the ice cream in an ice cream float really does float. Most students thought it would and we tested their hypothesis out by enjoying a root beer or orange float at snack time. All the students said they liked the floats. Students made a 50's necklace, enjoyed 1950's activities such as bowling and having a sock hop in the gym as well as playing with hula hoops and scooters. They also learned some 1950's dances such as the Twist and Hand Jive as well as The Stroll. As a final activity the students had a bubble blowing contest. The students found this activity difficult but some students were able to blow bubbles. Miss Hooper has been helping the students explore colours during activity time. The students have previously been exploring colour with paints and coloured water. After reading the book "Little Blue And Little Yellow" the students discussed what would happen if they mixed two colours together (red/yellow) like in the book. After charting student ideas Miss Hooper helped the students make red and yellow Playdoh. The students found that mixing large balls of yellow Playdoh with smaller balls of red Playdoh created orange Playdoh. Sasha was correct in his prediction. The students will be exploring other colour combinations in the coming week. Last week the students spent time with Mr. Bell's grade 6 students planting bulbs under Mrs Nancy's direction. Last week the students were working on Halloween activities. Under Miss Hooper's direction the students decorated their pumpkin. The students voted to decorate their pumpkin from a character on the Paw Patrol cartoon that also matched the picture on Zachary's shirt. Students were working on their art projects of making pumpkins and ghosts. The students also spent time on making cookies for one of the centers for our Halloween fun afternoon on Friday. The grade seven students in Mr. Thompson/Mrs. Kehoe's class and grade seven/eight students in Mrs. McMahon's class helped the students move through 8 Halloween stations working on various activities. Great fun was had by all! |
