The students were given a plastic cup filled with Cheerios (tires). We discussed how they could make the tires (Cheerios) smaller. It was decided that the students would crush the tires after they marked the amount of space the tires took up in the cup. After crushing the tires the students noticed the new amount of space the tires took up in the cup. All students noted that the tires took up a smaller amount of space. Therefore crushing the tires would take up a smaller space in a landfill.
In order to make a road, water and wallpaper paste were added to the cup. Once the material was mixed it was put on a paper and the student groups proceeded to make a road. Some groups were better at it then others. Some groups found that if they overworked the material they could not build a road. We took a vote and decided that Heidi and Parker's road turned out the best. It was in the shape of a heart.
