The class has been working on the idea of making fair shares in math. Using a two penguin mat from Deanna Jump, the students were encouraged to count out a certain number of fish crackers and then fairly share them between the two penguins. Students had to decide if the sharing was fair or not. The students were working on counting skills and encouraged to count one by one and recognize whether the number given could be shared fairly. We also then discussed which penguin had the most or least and whether the number was an even or odd number. This particular activity is the beginning steps toward working with fractions in the older grades.
