For the last two weeks the students have been learning about how to take care of their teeth. The students have shared what they know about teeth care. We have read a number of books about teeth. Do you know that children have 20 teeth? We have also done a number of experiments on how food causes our teeth to get dirty and if not kept clean may cause plaque and cavities. Our first experiment involved putting hard boiled eggs in coke. Good observations were made by the students when the eggs where first put in the coke. The eggs represent the students teeth. Right away the students could see that the coke discoloured the eggs (teeth). The students learned that brushing with toothpaste would clean the eggs (teeth). Our second experiment was to put the clean eggs in vinegar. By the second day the students could see that the vinegar dissolved the eggs shell. This reminded students that it is important to brush their teeth twice a day or cavities could form. The students have also been learning the names and importance of certain teeth such as incisors, canines, and molars and which teeth we bite and chew with when eating certain food. On Wednesday the students listened to a presentation by students from St. Clair on dental care. These activities and discussions promote the expectation for health 1.3 -practise and discuss appropriate personal hygiene. . .
