As part of our science unit on understanding the natural world and the need to care for and respect the environment, the students were exposed to the ideas of reusing and recycling. After reading a number of books on the subject the students were able to discuss different ways of taking care of the environment such as conserving energy through turning off the tap when brushing their teeth or turning off the lights when leaving a room. We also discussed landfills and how it is important to reuse and recycle as much as we can. As a conclusion to our unit the students were encouraged to create a recycled project. After looking at the various recycled material I brought in through playing the recycling game (sorting recycled material by paper, cans, bottles, and plastic) the students made a plan of what they wanted to build. For a number of days the students were encouraged to create their ideas out of the recycled materials with minimal help. The students were very proud of their creations.
