The past week was all about pumpkins. The students worked on their pumpkin art. They learned how to mix red and yellow paint in order to paint their pumpkins orange. They learned how to cut out multiple copies of facial features so that their pieces were the same. We also completed an investigation using real pumpkins. The students had to figure out how tall, the size, number of lines, number of seeds and whether their pumpkin would float or sink. Most students were surprised that all three pumpkins (small, medium and large) floated in water. We then got down to cleaning out the pumpkins in preparation for counting the seeds after the students took part in a graph on which pumpkin they thought would have the most seeds. Most students chose the large pumpkin. Some students changed their mind after learning the fact that each line on a pumpkin results in a row of seeds forming inside the pumpkin and that the more lines a pumpkin has results in more seeds it may have. This Monday we will be counting the seeds and then roasting them. I wonder which pumpkin will have the most seeds?
