On Tuesday the school had a Winter Wizardry Math Day. Parents were invited to join their child to see some of the activities we do during Math class each day. The Grade 1 students have been working on 2-dimensional shapes in math. We started our session with a Number Talk lesson. Then students played a variety of games for each math period in the morning and afternoon. Thank you to those parents and grandparents that could come. In math the student created a snowman based on various criteria. Students had to build and colour their snowman based on whether they like hot cocoa or not, how old they are, whether they like cold weather or hot weathers and so on. Once their snowman were made, we compiled the class data together. Students then had to graph the class data and answer questions based on their data choices. This fun activity is being used for our Data Management strand in math. This past week we started a new math unit on measurement. This unit allows the students to show the actual measurement of items in the classroom using non-standard measuring tools. The student's decided on objects in pictures that were longer/shorter and used 5 unifix cubes to find objects in the classroom that were longer, shorter or about equal in length to the unifix cubes. Every Friday the students practice making tally marks by counting their golden tickets that they have received throughout the week for good behaviour. The tickets are then counted by 5's in order to find out how many they received for the week. This is great practice in counting by 5's and counting on from a set number. Two skills students need to master in grade one. The student's last week of December was very busy. Each day the students were encouraged to dress a different way. A core group of the class showed great creativity in the way they expressed themselves each day. These students earned themselves 50 points for their house league team each day. In math the students worked on patterning making Christmas candy canes out of beads. They also worked on some data management activities involving taking surveys of who liked candy canes and what part of the gingerbread man cookies they ate first. We will continue to work on our gingerbread man graphing results in January as well as reviewing the many various gingerbread man picture books for reading. In writing the students studied the book "Santa's Stuck". The students composed ways in which they would unstuck Santa from the chimney. The students also decorated the cookies they had made with Miss Nancy. Great fun was had by all! Congratulations to all students on their performance of the plate routine to the Nutcracker March music during our Christmas concert. I received many complements from the staff and parents on our performance. The students completed their Christmas writing piece which was creating a application to become one of Santa's elves. The students were very proud of their creations. This past week was about getting ready for the holiday season. We worked on making Christmas cookies with Miss Nancy. We also needed to create a decoration for the class door contest. We worked on making green paper chains for our Christmas tree decoration. We also were given stars to decorate the gym for the Christmas concert this coming Wednesday. Performances will be a 1:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. The students have been hard at work on our plate routine for the concert since November. This coming week we welcome two new students, twins Alejandro and Daniel Perdomo Mujica. Our Christmas can drive will end on Wednesday. Please send in any more cans or new Christmas toys so we can fill up the bus, coming on Wednesday. With the opening of the Christmas store the students were able to pick out what they wanted for gifts for family members and the students took a picture with Santa. The excitement is building for Christmas! Part of our school week is taken up with physical education. This is done in two forms. We have formal gym classes twice a week. In the pictures below the students are working on a movement circuit of activities using scoops, hula hoops, jump ropes and scooters. We also take daily brain breaks in the form of movement to music. We may have one or two movement breaks when transitioning between lessons or when I notice the students need to move after sitting for a long period of time. Congratulations to Ella who was chosen for the Journey To Holiness award for Respect. Each day while Ms. Raniwsky or I do guided reading with a small group of students, the other students complete various literacy centres. The students rotate through a variety of centres such as sight word work using the iPads, read to self, word work, listen to reading and writing. When students are working on their individual centres this allows me time to work with small groups of students on teaching reading skills. Reading groups are based on the students current reading level after testing with the PM Benchmarks. In grade one there are 1-16 levels for PM Benchmarks. I work with small groups of students with similar benchmark levels. The goal is to increase students benchmark levels throughout the year. This is also accomplished by students practicing their sight word rings which are tested every Friday. Please help your child return their word rings every Friday for testing as well as returning their reading book every Monday for exchange.
Each week the students are exposed to poetry as part of our morning language block. We start each language block with reading and discussing one or two poems for the week. The students choral read the poems each day. These poems are also added to their poetry book so that they can practice reading them for the week. We also may discuss the sight words, rhyming words, punctuation and beginning, middle and ending sounds of words in each poem. By the end of the week the students are eager to show that they can read the poems on their own. |
