In addition we have watched how our Painted Lady caterpillars have gotten bigger and changed into the stage 3 chrysalis. We observed today how the butterflies have emerged from their chrysalis into real butterflies. Many of the students spent their afternoon play time making observations of the butterflies in the butterfly house. At the end of the day we watched seven of the butterflies fly away outside. We also saw how well they are camouflaged when some landed on the sticks on the ground and we had a hard time locating them.
In our study of the life cycle of butterflies, the students have been interested in completing different butterfly activities. Students have been working on caterpillar and butterfly crafts as well as making butterflies with the life cycle shown using pasta noodles of different kinds. These crafts have helped the students with learning and remembering the stages in the life cycle of the butterfly.
